What is Energy Labelling?

Domestic heating and water heating products represent about 30% of domestic energy consumption in Europe.
Designing eco-friendly products and promoting technologies with the highest performance to end users will mean that in 2020:

  • A total annual energy saving equivalent to 56 million tons of oil. This is as if heating and water heating systems of two nations as large as Italy would be turned off.

From September 26th, 2015, ErP and energy labelling regulations will become effective in Europe for space heating and water heating products (boilers, heat pumps, micro-cogeneration devices, water heaters, and hot water storage tanks)¹.

¹Regulations will only apply to products placed on the market after 26/09/2015; those purchased before that date can continue to be sold and installed.

How to read Energy labels

There are different labels, based on product type and functions (space heating and water heating, for products doing both, the label must show both classifications).

Besides the energy class, the label provides other information that might be useful to understand the product’s environmental impact (e.g. power and consumption in different climate areas, noise levels, etc.).

It is possible to increase the energy efficiency of space heating and water heating by connecting different product accessories and controls to create a system. When this is the case, a system (package) label is necessary, in addition to single product labels.

Roles and responsibilities

MERCHANTS

The products/system merchants sell, rent, lease or exhibit products to end users; therefore, plumbers, technicians and designers can be part of this category:

  • The products or systems are equipped with their respective labels, and that they are visible,
  • The products/systems are sold along with information on energy efficiency requested by regulations, in case they are sold without being seen by the end user before buying,
  • Any technical advertisement or promotional material of a product or system containing information on energy efficiency or price, must also indicate information about their energy efficiency class.

Roles and responsibilities

INSTALLERS

The installer is the person fitting the product and they are responsible for providing the products with the following information:

  • A product energy label (in case there would be just one product),
  • A technical fiche,
  • A system energy label in addition to the single product label, if they are selling a system of products or if they believe that the single product sold might be combined in system in the future,
  • A system fiche, having the sections concerning the product (or the system for sale) already filled in.
